Atlético Madrid had to win from the superior Bayern Munich to qualify for the eighth finals of the Champions League in the penultimate group game. That just didn't work out. In Spain it was just before time 1-1.
FC Porto did qualify for the second round. The Portuguese in their group at home took a point (0-0) against frontrunner Manchester City, while number three Olympiakos lost 2-1 at Olympique Marseille.
It helped Atlético, the losing Champions League finalist of 2014 and 2016, that it already qualified Bayern - the titleholder won his previous four games - did not enter his strongest formation.
João Félix put Atlético in the lead after half an hour. The 21-year-old Portuguese talent, for which 126 million euros were laid down last year, came in front of his man and hit the jackpot. After half-time he also hit the bar.
Long time Félix's goal seemed enough for the win and a ticket for the next round, but a few minutes before time Bayern hit Bayern with a used penalty shot by Thomas Müller.
In the carousel below, look at the stand in group A and group C.
At Red Bull Salzburg next week, Atlético has enough point to go on. The Austrians, who won 3-1 at Lokomotiv Moscow, should win.
City, like Bayern already placed and playing with a B team, was much better than Porto. Zaidu Sanusi took a bet from Raheem Sterling off the line and Agustin Marchesin miraculously saved a bet from Ferran Torres. Gabriel Jesus scored, but was offside.
