Who thought that a trip to the League Cup Arsenal would offer solace, came out cheated Tuesday night. The swaying Londoners went down hard against Manchester City in the quarterfinals: 1-4.
Arsenal has been waiting almost two months for a victory in the national English tournaments. In the Premier League the last seven matches were lost five times and tied twice and in the League Cup lost to City. Only in the Europa League did trainer Mikel Arteta's team still manage to win.
The defeat against Manchester City came about with the necessary help of Arsenal goalkeeper Rúnar Rúnarsson, normally second goalkeeper.
In the third minute, the Icelander was waiting for the ball to fall into his hands in the 0-1 of Gabriel Jesus, allowing the Brazilian striker to tap in. And at the 1-2, Rúnarsson grabbed a tenable free kick from Riyad Mahrez.
Alexandre Lacazette had levelled in between (1-1), the 1-3 and 1-4 came in the name of Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte. Foden seemed to be offside at his hit, but the VAR did not enter the League Cup until the next round.
Earlier on Tuesday Brentford reached the semifinals, for the first time in Cup history - FA Cup and League Cup - of the Championships club. A hit by Josh Dasilva turned out to be enough for the victory against Newcastle United: 1-0.
Wednesday evening the other two quarter finals are on the program. Stoke City, just like Brentford coming out on the second English level, will meet Tottenham Hotspur, while Everton will receive Donny van de Beek's Manchester United.
