According to Liverpool trainer Jürgen Klopp, Virgil van Dijk's rehabilitation is going well. The defender of the Reds and captain of the Dutch national team is currently recovering from a severe knee injury.
"He's doing well under the circumstances", said Klopp at his press conference prior to the Champions League match with Ajax on Tuesday night.
Oranje bond coach Frank de Boer already stated on Sunday evening in Studio Voetbal that the recovery of Van Dijk, who underwent surgery last month soon after he was injured, is going well.
De Boer hopes that Van Dijk will be able to play matches again in May, so that he will be ready in time for the European Championships next summer.
According to Klopp, his team is facing a close game against Ajax. The German coach is impressed with the form the Amsterdammers are currently taking.
"Ajax is doing very well lately. They're pretty much whistling through the premier league. They get good results, with good play. It's a good team, with a lot of talent."
Liverpool cannot have Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcântara, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri against Ajax in addition to Van Dijk. Captain Jordan Henderson is fit enough to play.
The long list of injured players means, according to Klopp, that he doesn't have the chance to save or rotate players in view of Liverpool's busy schedule.
"We don't have enough fit players to give priority to certain leagues", said Klopp, who with his team in a draw against Ajax is sure to hibernate in the Champions League.
"A good result would of course help us tremendously in these busy times. But I'm not looking at it that way yet. That would mean that I already take three points against Ajax into account. It's going to be an important match against a good opponent."
