Liverpool collects sacrifice with second season cut; United smells blood

Liverpool has run into its second league defeat in the Premier League. With base player Georginio Wijnaldum, the Reds, who had already matched in his previous two games, went down 1-0 with sub topper Southampton.

Danny Ings makes the winning hit after just two minutes by shooting the ball diagonally and with a bow over goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Other than that, Trent Alexander-Arnold wasn't completely awake just before by wrongly valuing James Ward-Prowse's assistant.

Hands, but no penalty

Flat rest Liverpool seemed to get a penalty kick when Wijnaldum saw a shot attempt against the arm of Southampton defender Jack Stephens. However, the video referee did not see a penalty in it.

Liverpool then insisted, occasionally looked dangerous, but very big odds didn't create last season's champion.

After the final whistle Southampton trainer Ralph Hasenhüttl showed his joy. With tears in his eyes he fell down on his knees.

Liverpool has already lost more points than in the entire previous championship year (18 at 15). Manchester United can only lead the Premier League next week. The club will have to win the Burnley catch-up game on 12 January.

Manchester United was last runner-up in the Premier League in the 2012/2013 season.
