Salzburg attacks, but Atlético wins and continues in Champions League

Atlético Madrid achieved the eighth finals of the Champions League by beating Red Bull Salzburg in the last group match.

In the battle for second place in Group A it won 2-0 with the Austrians. Bayern Munich, which was 2-0 too strong for Lokomotiv Moscow, was already sure of the group win.

Salzburg had to win to knock Atlético from second place and started fiercely. Mergim Berisha shot on the pole, Dominik Szoboszlai bumped into Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak and Enock Mwepa headed over.

The goal fell on the other side though: Mario Hermoso headed out of a free kick from Yannick Carrasco.

After halftime, little changed in the game image. Salzburg, which never wintered in the Champions League, got some big chances through Rasmus Kristensen, Szoboszlai, Patson Daka and Mwepa, missed them and then saw Atlético strike out of a counter: a cross by Angel Correa was pushed into the goal by Carrasco with a volley.

City wins group C, Olympiakos to Europa League

In group C almost all cards had been shuffled before tonight. Manchester City and FC Porto were already sure of the next round in the Champions League, Olympique Marseille and Olympiakos were still fighting for the Europa League ticket.

City-Marseille finished 3-0 and Olympiakos-Porto in 0-2. This means that the Greeks, who finished equal to the French, wintered in Europe on the basis of a better mutual result.

The group win was for City, which in the end stayed three points ahead of Porto in the final ranking. Although there was nothing more at stake for City, the English went full for the win. That came after goals from Ferran Torres, Sergio Agüero and Raheem Sterling.

FC Porto won from Olympiakos by a penalty from Otávio and a shot from Mateus Uribe.
